Buckrun
« on: October 12, 2012, 10:13:22 PM »
My grandpa drew one of the 10 buck tags. So I was looking through the archives and the newest talk of this hunt I could find was 2009. There were mixed opinions on this hunt and I was wondering if anyone on here had drawn it or knew someone who had. I don't think I get to go with him but I wish I could. From what I've heard and read it's not much of a "hunt", but my grandpa is 75 and hopefully will have the chance to shoot a real nice buck and not have to kill himself doing it. He gets one day to hunt and I don't know if it is guided or if they just say GO at daylight. He has kind've an "in" with the guy who runs it, I believe his name is Dave Stevens. I believe he sells tags for big bucks, or any deer. And also had a deal with fish and wildlife for raffle hunts. $25 a ticket, buy 5 get one free. There are only 10 buck tags, and few other antlerless or any deer tags. Just tryin to do a little homework and let him know what to expect. The add for it was in the back of the regs and the drawing was a few days ago.

The doe tags are usually DIY in a specified area. The buck tags are usually guided or semi guided. The hunts take place later in the year when the deer have settled down from the general rat race. It is a good hunt for an older gentleman since they will spot from a pickup and not walk a lot. The deer quality is pretty good this year. He will be able to look over a lot of deer.

Thats kinda what I figured. The season is from oct 31 to dec 31, and  most of the time they are in late november from what I've heard.  Is there any way to find out how many people put in for this raffle?

Prepare him for the worst experience of his life. Stevens is widely known as the biggest pr*** in Eastern Washington. The WDFW doesn't like him, nor does anyone else "except his fellow adjacent landowners" in Grant County. He will try to charge you big bucks for the hunt! Even if you drive the public roads through, and around his property and look like a hunter he will follow you, threaten to call the cops, and tell you that you cannot be there! There is nothing good about this guy, and I can assure you there will be nothing good about your grandfathers hunt. He is the reason the adjecent units like Harrington don't have as many deer as they did 7 years ago. The deer know they can take refuge on area 201.

I completely disagree and you must try to hunt his property illegally to piss him off.  He is very nice and has been more then friendly on his hunts and very cool and has improved the hunting in all of the surrounding areas.  For you to say his hunt is going to be *censored*ty is completely false.  I have hunted his property more then a half dozen times.  I personally drew a youth tag there when I was younger and had a blast.  I also have got does on his property as well as many does for my grandpa also a buck tag for my mom.  So I do have plenty of experience with him and they have all been 100% successful and lots of deer to look at and hunt.  So for you to bash someone is totally false.  The only reason the department may disagree with him would be because he knows how to manage his deer herds to get big bucks on his property.  Don't hate on a guy because he owes awesome hunting ground that he has built over year of managing right!  You will have a great hunt for your grandpa with no pressure on the deer and no aholes walking on top of you!

My son hunted his place when he was 8yrs old and only had a management tag. Stevens let him kill a very nice non-typical buck and only charged the $300. for the management tag. We had a blast and he treated the kid awesome.  My nephew was in a bad accident a few years ago and ended up in a wheelchair. We called Stevens and talked to him about getting him on the property to shoot a buck and Stevens said "no problem, get him over here and we will see what we can do". The kid ended up shooting a dandy 175in buck the first day. Nothing but great experiences with buckrun and always treated great.

Enaz- Your grandpa should have a great time.

I heard that buckrun has public land within the property but it is all land locked. If that is the case I have a problem with someone profiting of public land. I am all for management of deer herds to get quality animals but not for personal gain on public ground. I don"t know where the boundaries are so I can't look it up on a map? Has anyone heard the same thing? This is just what I have heard.

A lot of public land is landlocked by private... Why would it be his fault if he didn't, or wasn't able to purchase it????

I went on one doe hunt there for a youth... I don't think I met Stevens but the guy who pretty much told us where to go was nice and polite... He even came up with a quad and hauled the kid and deer to my truck while I walked back... And two of the bucks we saw were in the 170's and one closer to 190's!!! I made the kid hold off on 3 does just so we could watch the bucks!!  :chuckle:   If you can see that kind of quality deer in such a small time frame... Maybe 2 1/2 hours... He's doing something right...

I've only ever heard good things about Buckrun. The $$$ can be high, but from all the guys I know who have had the opportunity, not a one has had anything bad to say.

If there is public land within Buckrun why hasn't anyone been helicoptered in to hunt it or maybe there has been?

I think the public land is the stafford game preserve which is closed to hunting.

No, there is some accessible state land within the Buckrun.

They can grow big deer because they don't shoot very many.  It's not rocket science.

After starting this post I found out I knew 3 of the 10 tag holders . 2 of them already went and my grandpa's hunt is tomorrow. Both of them got good bucks. One of them being a Real heavy 24"  4 point with a kicker off one side. The other is a heavy 24" 4 point.  From what they said there are some monsters runnin around there if he can get on one. I guess the fog's been really bad over there the past few days so hopefully it clears up for him. I'll be waiting anxiously with knife in hand ready to skin it for him tomorrow, I'll be posting his pics tomorrow night. Thanks everyone for the input
